FAQS ABOUT BUTTER CHURN

What is a Butter Churn?

A butter churn, or butter churning machine, is a device designed to transform cream into butter, separating it from buttermilk. Early butter churns were handcrafted from wood and operated manually. Today, these machines are crafted from materials like metal, plastic, and glass, and many models are powered by electricity.

How Does a Butter Churn Function?

A butter churn is a device used to convert cream into butter. This is achieved through a mechanical process that agitates the cream until the fat molecules coalesce into butter, separating from the buttermilk. The churn can be manual, where you turn a handle to agitate the cream, or electric, which uses a motor to do the work.
For an example of how an electric butter churn works, check out this brief video showcasing the Milky FJ 10:

Can I Use Any Type of Cream in a Butter Churn?

Yes, you can use any type of cream in a butter churn, but the cream's fat content will affect the butter's yield and quality. Heavy or double cream with a higher fat content (typically around 35-40%) is preferred because it contains more fat necessary for producing butter. Lower-fat creams can still be churned into butter but may yield less butter and require more churning time.

How Long Does It Take to Make Butter with a Butter Churn?

The time it takes to make butter with a butter churn can vary depending on the type of churn used, the amount and type of cream, and the temperature of the cream. Typically, it can take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. Electric churns, like the Milky FJ models, can significantly reduce the churning time compared to manual methods.

What is the Difference Between Manual and Electric Butter Churns?

The main difference between manual and electric butter churns is the method of agitation. Manual churns require physical effort to turn a handle or crank to agitate the cream, making the process more labor-intensive but giving you control over the speed and intensity of churning. Electric churns use a motor to agitate the cream, offering a more consistent and less labor-intensive process. Electric churns are generally faster and more suitable for larger quantities of cream.

What Types of Butter Can You Create with a Butter Churning Machine?

The variety of butter you can make is virtually limitless and only constrained by your creativity. For instance, Nick Power from Australia crafts a range of butters including Salted, Unsalted, Garlic, Honey, Truffle, and even Chocolate butter for Easter. Nick uses our electric butter churn, the Milky FJ 32.

Is Churning Butter at Home Economical?

Churning butter at home can be economical, depending on the cost of cream in your area and how much butter you consume. Homemade butter can be fresher and tailored to your taste preferences, offering better value for money compared to store-bought butter, especially if you value the artisanal aspect of food preparation.

Do You Have Small Butter Churn that I Can Use at Home?

Certainly! Some of our models are quite compact and can easily fit on your kitchen countertop. If you’re searching for a home butter churn, we recommend considering one of the following models:

How Much Butter Can I Make in One Batch?

The amount of butter you can make in one batch depends on the capacity of your butter churn and the fat content of the cream used. For example, the Milky FJ 10 can process a smaller cream volume than the larger Milky FJ 100 C. Typically, you can expect to produce butter equivalent to 35-45% of the volume of cream used. So, for every liter of cream, you can expect roughly 350 to 450 grams of butter.

What is the Highest Butterfat Content Achievable with a Butter Churning Machine?

Our customers have managed to reach a butterfat content of up to 86.5%. While there might be higher levels achieved, this is the highest we've been informed of.

How Much Butter Can I Obtain From My Milk?

With our butter churning machines, you can expect to yield about 4% butter from your milk. This means that from 100 kg of milk, you would produce approximately 4 kg of butter.

What Can I Do with the Buttermilk Left After Making Butter?

Buttermilk is a delicious product on its own, but you can enhance it by adding various fruits and flavors. It’s also a popular ingredient in many baking recipes.

Can I Make Butter without a Butter Churning Machine?

Yes, you can! If you’re only making a small amount and don’t plan to do it regularly, a standard kitchen mixer will work just fine. Or, you can get creative like Brian Johnston from the US, who crafted his own butter churn using a drill press and a large paint stirring paddle from his local hardware store.

What Types of Cream Can the Butter Churn Process?

The butter churn can process cream made from cow, goat, or sheep milk.

How Do I Obtain Cream?

You can separate cream from milk using one of the cream separators available at Milky Day. While it's possible to collect cream by allowing it to rise to the surface of the milk, this method is less effective—especially with goat or sheep milk. Without a cream separator, you may leave behind up to half of the cream in the milk and end up with a lower-fat cream than you could otherwise achieve.

Can I Reduce Milk Spoilage Using Your Butter Churn?

Absolutely! We believe this is one of the primary reasons dairy farmers choose our products. As Brian Johnston from the US puts it:

"My story on creating raw milk products was the excess milk I had from my cow and the need to do something to not waste the milk I had... I grew up with a grandmother that taught me how to make simple cheeses and butter. I like the taste of home made products.  I then shared the products with friends and the friends started asking me if I made more.  That's how I got into the product side.  It is easier to sell just the raw milk. BUT in retail there is an ebb and flow of customers and the milk production continues.  So, I just do what I can to reduce spoilage or waste of my product. The money is good no matter what form I sell the "milk". That is how I went from one cow to six."

How Do I Clean and Maintain My Butter Churn?

Cleaning and maintaining your butter churn involves disassembling the churn (if possible) and washing each part with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly with hot water to remove any soap residue and dairy remnants. For electric churns, ensure the electrical components do not come into contact with water. Regular maintenance may also involve checking for and tightening loose parts and applying food-grade lubricant to moving parts if necessary.
